On May 27, 2022, in the presence of several partners, the Viridis Environnement team officially inaugurated its brand new site for the storage and transfer of fertilising residual materials (MRF) located in Bécancour. The installation, with a capacity ranging from 6,000 to 7,000 tons, whose construction work took place over a year, will start operating in June 2022.

For the occasion, Ms. Lucie Allard, Mayor of Bécancour, Mr. Louis Plamondon, Deputy of Bécancour-Nicolet-Saurel in the House of Commons, Mr. Richard Campeau, Deputy of Bourget and parliamentary assistant to the Minister of the Environment and the Fight against Climate Change, as well as several mayors, mayors, prefects, municipal councillors and representatives of the MRCs of Bécancour and Nicolet-Yamaska were also present., the Bécancour-Nicolet-Yamaska Intermunicipal Integrated Waste Management Board and, finally, the Société du Parc Industriel et Port de Bécancour. More than a hundred guests were gathered inside the huge dome.

The President and CEO, Mr. Renaud Lapierre, presented this brand new site as a major asset in terms of the range of options that favor the transport logistics of MRFs, customers and industrial, municipal and agricultural partners. “This new installation will contribute to optimizing the flexibility of our MRF reception and distribution network, which will benefit all of our partners. For us, it is above all a key asset that reinforces the role of Viridis as a true leader in the circular economy across Quebec,” said Mr. Lapierre.

Quebec City will be one of the first beneficiaries of this site since Viridis will manage part of the digestate from the Centre de Biomethanization de l'Agglomération de Québec (CBAQ), starting in the fall.

A unique infrastructure

According to Mr. Yves Girard, President and CEO of Nutrinor and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Viridis, the CTTMR is the largest closed MRF transshipment facility in Quebec. He also said that this project is being carried out as part of the company's 10-year anniversary celebrations. Built on a concrete foundation, the megadome is 80 feet by 250 feet in size. The site will be in a position to accommodate various types of MRF, including biosolids, digestates, green waste and calcium amendments.

“The choice of Bécancour to establish such a project is a strategic aspect for Viridis since the city is located at the heart of an important generator and user pool of MRF. In addition, with this new temporary storage site, we allow our customers in the region to receive MRFs at the time they want; thus facilitating their operations”, adds Michel St-Germain, Vice President Valuation and Agriculture at Viridis.

An ambitious and contemporary environmental vision

With the construction of the CTTMR, Viridis Environnement consolidates its leading position in MRF recycling. After 10 years of operations marked by major achievements, the company nevertheless intends to continue its growth by developing new subsidiaries.

Among the company's portfolio of projects, we find the TRIOM pilot plant, which makes it possible to treat and recycle organic matter from garbage collection in the residential sector and industries, businesses and institutions (ICI), with or without the establishment of the brown bin.

We also find Keridis Bioenergy, a joint venture of Viridis, specializing in the co-development and co-investment of the biomethanization sector in Quebec, aiming to valorize organic matter from agricultural, food and industrial residues for the production of renewable natural gas (RNG) and biofertilizer.
